CLIENT SNAPSHOT

The Waikato Regional Council economic dashboard developed by Data n Dashboards brings together multiple public data sources into a single interactive platform. Designed to support regional planning and economic insights, the dashboard provides decision-makers with a clear and unified view of Waikato’s economic performance.

The Waikato Regional Council is responsible for managing the region’s natural resources, including land, water, and air, as well as overseeing regional transport planning. It operates within a broader local government system where responsibilities such as infrastructure and economic development are shared with other authorities. Its work involves environmental management, regulatory functions, and support for regional planning processes, where data are used to inform policy and decision-making.
In addition, the council develops policies, issues resource consents, and uses scientific data and monitoring to inform decision-making and ensure regulatory compliance across the region.

Our interns, including talented scholars from NED University, weren’t just observers—they actively contributed to live projects, mastered new skills, and prepared to become tomorrow’s leaders in data analytics. We’re thrilled to see them transform professionally, becoming vital contributors to the data revolution.

THE CHALLENGE

Waikato Regional Council sought a smarter way to access and visualise the wealth of economic and community data available across the region, bringing it together in one place to support clearer, faster decision-making.

With economic data spanning multiple publicly available sources, the Council wanted a unified view, one that made it easy for staff and stakeholders to access key indicators, track regional performance, and communicate insights without the complexity of navigating multiple systems.

The goal was clear: give the right people access to timely, visual, and actionable economic data, and make that access as seamless as possible.

THE DND APPROACH

Data n Dashboard worked closely with the Waikato Regional Council to design and deliver custom dashboards tailored specifically to the region’s economic reporting needs. Rather than offering an off-the-shelf solution, Data n Dashboards took the time to understand which economic indicators mattered most to the Council and built around them.

Drawing on Data n Dashboards’ Public Sector Data as a Service (PSDaaS) platform, the team compiled and integrated data from multiple publicly available sources into a single, coherent data layer. On top of this, Data n Dashboards built custom dashboards that presented the region’s economic performance in a clear, visual format purpose-built for both day-to-day staff use and senior stakeholder reporting. The Waikato Regional Council make them accessible to all, allowing the general public to see live data in a much more sorted way by viewing figures rather than examining raw numbers. Every element of the dashboard was designed with the end user in mind: intuitive, accessible, and ready to use without specialist data skills.

This approach enabled the development of a scalable Waikato Regional Council economic dashboard that integrates multiple public datasets into a single trusted source of economic insights.

THE SOLUTION

Data n Dashboards delivered a suite of custom dashboards focused on the Waikato region’s economic performance, built on the Data n Dashboards Public Sector Data as a Service (PSDaaS) platform.

What was delivered:

  • Custom economy-focused dashboards tailored to the Council’s reporting and planning needs
  • Integration of multiple publicly available datasets, compiled and curated by Data n Dashboards, into a single unified data layer
  • A centralised, always-on view of regional economic indicators — accessible without specialist data skills
  • Ongoing data updates through Data n Dashboards’ PSDaaS subscription model, ensuring the dashboards stay current

The result was a platform that transformed how the Council interacts with data, moving from static, manually assembled reports to a dynamic, visual tool that anyone on the team could use.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR YOUR ORGANISATION

If your council or regional agency is still relying on manual data collection and disconnected spreadsheets to understand economic performance or other key indicators to see how the region is performing based on facts and figures, then you are not alone, but you are leaving value on the table.

The data your region needs to make better decisions already exists. The challenge is not finding it, but bringing it together in a way that is accessible, timely, and built for the people who actually need to act on it. Data n Dashboards’ PSDaaS platform and custom dashboards make that possible without the cost or complexity of building a data infrastructure from scratch.

Whether you manage economic development, community wellbeing, transport, or environmental outcomes, a unified dashboard view can fundamentally change how your team plans, reports, and responds.

RESULTS & IMPACT

The Waikato Regional Council economic dashboard provides a single source of truth for regional economic data. By bringing multiple datasets together into one platform, the council can more easily monitor trends, communicate insights, and support evidence-based decision-making.
